Health Suite
Marie Reed has a full-time nurse on-site daily from 8:00am–4:30pm, provided through Children’s Hospital’s School Nurse Program, who maintains immunization and health records for all students. Families must submit updated immunization and health certificates upon enrolling each year.
DCPS Health Requirements
DCPS requires annual health physicals and oral health assessments, and students must be current on immunizations to attend school. Required forms include:
- Universal Health Certificate (annual, all grades) — documents immunizations, TB assessment, lead screening, and a physical exam. Questions can be directed to the DC Department of Health Immunization Division at 202-576-9325.
- Oral Health Assessment (annual, all grades)
- Medication and Treatment Authorization Form (as needed)
- Asthma Action Plan (as needed)
- Action Plan for Anaphylaxis (as needed)
Unless a medical or religious exemption applies, DC law requires immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, mumps, measles, rubella, polio, Hib, hepatitis B, and varicella to attend school.
Common Wellness Guidelines
- If a child is treated by the nurse, the family is contacted with a report.
- A fever or vomiting means the family will be asked to pick up the child.
- Lice requires treatment and proof of treatment before returning to school — a repeat treatment 7–10 days later is recommended.
- In a serious medical emergency, the school calls 911 and the family; a staff member accompanies the child if transported by ambulance.
