Marie Reed students participate in a variety of school events, celebrations, and performances throughout the year, including:
- Hispanic Heritage Celebration (Sept/Oct) — history, song, and dance celebrating Hispanic culture.
- Winter Arts Showcase (December) — student art and musical performances.
- Black History Month Celebration (February) — history, song, and dance.
- Kindness Week (around Valentine’s Day) — a week of spirit days and kindness-themed activities.
- Women’s History Month (March) — celebrating women’s contributions to history.
- Math Day (Pi Day, March 14) — a Digits of Pi competition and the Annual 24 Challenge.
- Career Day — local professionals share their careers with students.
- Asian Pacific American Celebration (May) — history, song, and dance.
- Spelling Bees, English and Spanish (grades 3–5) — school winners advance to DCPS-wide competitions.
- Festival de Poesía — a celebration of Spanish-language poetry, with winners advancing to the DCPS-wide festival.
- Field Day — a non-competitive day of outdoor games and teamwork activities.
- Spring Arts Showcase (June) — student art and musical performances.
Field Trips
Learning extends outside the classroom — Marie Reed teachers take advantage of the region’s rich resources to enrich student learning. K-5 students typically go on a field trip about every 6–8 weeks tied to their current unit of study; Pre-K and Kindergarten students go roughly once a quarter.
Families are notified in writing in advance and must grant written permission for each field trip. Parent chaperones are welcome but must be arranged in advance with the sponsoring teacher.
