Every parent, guardian, and staff member at Marie Reed is already a member of the PTO. There are no dues — we run on volunteers and donations.
Who We Are
The Marie Reed PTO includes every parent and staff member in our school community. Unlike many similar organizations, membership is automatic and free, and everyone is encouraged to contribute in ways that are meaningful to them.
Our PTO was founded in 2013 by a small group of parents and staff and has grown to include as many as 30 active parents. We think of ourselves as a non-traditional PTO: at Marie Reed, we are constantly reflecting, refining, and improving so we can better support students and families.
Our school community is wonderfully diverse — roughly 44% Hispanic/Latino, 21% Black/African-American, 21% White non-Hispanic, 8% Asian, and 6% multiracial, with fewer than 1% each Native American/Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander — and we work hard to make sure every family’s values, perspectives, and contributions are heard and appreciated.
What the PTO Does
The PTO provides critical funding and support for school programs, and works so that every student — regardless of their family’s financial situation — has the resources they need to learn and thrive. We have raised tens of thousands of dollars for school programming.
Programs & enrichment
Field trips, FoodPrints, after-school enrichment, summer camp, and more.
Community events
Movie Nights, Fall Festival, International Night, and a network of room parents.
Support for families
Winter coats, a Thanksgiving food drive, a uniform drive, and a holiday gift drive.
Safe and welcome
Our Community Safety Committee works to make sure all students and families have the resources they need to feel safe and welcome.
How the PTO Is Organized
The PTO is a partnership of families, teachers, and staff. There are three ways to be part of it:
- Members: every parent, guardian, and staff member. No dues and no sign-up needed.
- The PTO Board: an elected group of parents and staff who lead the hubs, keep the school community informed, and offer many ways for families to help. Meet the board.
- Hub members: family members, teachers, and staff who volunteer their time, for a single occasion or all year.
Our Four Hubs
Hubs are groups of volunteers, each focused on a specific need of our school community. Find the one that matches your interests or skills and join in — whatever amount of time you have to give.
Community Building
- Builds a sense of community among everyone at Marie Reed
- Organizes events like Fall Festival and International Night
- Leads the room parent network with the school’s Parent Coordinator
Student Achievement & Well-Being
- Leads PTO initiatives that support student achievement and well-being
- Coordinates support for families with urgent needs, such as uniform, coat, Thanksgiving, and holiday gift drives
- Finds ways to extend well-being efforts to every student and family
Teacher & Staff Support
- Leads efforts to support and appreciate school staff
- Organizes monthly breakfasts for teachers and staff, each sponsored by a grade
- Plans Teacher Appreciation Week in May
Fundraising & Finance
- Files the PTO’s annual taxes and maintains its 501(c)(3) status
- Develops the budget and tracks donations and spending
- Finds and writes grants and coordinates fundraising events
- Leads the fundraising strategy for the PTO’s annual and multi-year priorities
Our Nonprofit Status
The Marie Reed PTO is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 45-1199023). Contributions may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Please consult your tax advisor.
